Accelerated Reading
Accelerated Reading is a program we start
implementing in 2nd grade. Your child will take the STAR test on the computer at school. We will use their score to determine their AR goal. Your child will be rewarded each quarter for reaching their goal. The children that reach their goal all 4 quarters will be taken on a special field trip at the end of the year, get an AR t-shirt, plus, get their name put into a drawing for a new bicycle. To reach their goal, the student has to read an AR book no more than one level below, on, or above their level. Then, they must pass a 5-10 question test over the book. If they score a 60% or better they get points for reading that book. You can check to see what books and quizzes are offered by going to Renaissance Learning or use the AR Bookfinder site from Renaissance. Use the search box to see if your child's book has an AR test.
Research shows students perform better when parents are involved in the learning process. By logging onto Renaissance Home Connect parents can access real time information in English or Spanish to keep up to date with their child's AR progress.

AR Book Club
AR Book Club is a club designed to challenge young readers in second grade. Anyone meeting the requirements will go with Mrs. McAtee, to the High School, to meet with a group of English students each month between February and May. They will do fun activities centered around a book they read before each meeting. For the last meeting each student will choose a person to read a biography on. They will fill our a report about their person and share it with the group. They are also encouraged to dress up like that particular person. At the end of the school year this group will go on a field trip together. Any student interested in this club must meet the following requirements by January 31st.
1. The student must collect 35 points by reading AR books that are worth 1 point or more. These will most likely be chapter books. (For example, The Magic Tree House Series, Junie B. Jones, Jigsaw Jones, etc.)
2. The student must read 4 books that are worth 3 or more points each. These will be longer chapter books. (For example, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Charlotte's Web, Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing, etc.)
3. The deadline for reaching these requirements is January 31st.
